Salt Lake Community College, Salt Mine, the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce and Utah Media Group present Idea Lab, an event for men and women who are currently founding a startup, thinking of entrepreneurship, or wanting to implement a new idea into their current workplace. The hardest part of making an idea reality is starting and the key to startup success is execution.
During Idea Lab, attendees will practice execution skills in a risk-free zone, meet fascinating people, collaborate on interesting ideas, and inspire the next great startup idea. Idea Lab is a hands-on experience. Attendees will brainstorm an idea, create a solution, and prototype phases. Our knowledgeable facilitators will be on-site to help teams through these phases. At the end of the lab teams will get a chance to share ideas in front of a panel of business experts.

John Knotwell – Idea Lab Host
Knotwell is the president and CEO of the Utah Tech Council. He is a technology industry veteran, with most recent roles as Chief Revenue Officer at RizePoint where he was responsible for leading worldwide sales, alliances, services, and customer success.
Jason Croft – Keynote Speaker
Jason Croft is a registered patent attorney at Maschoff Brennan. He focuses his work on patent procurement, strategic counseling, and IP transactions.
A registered patent attorney, he prepares and prosecutes patent applications, performs IP due diligence, provides litigation support and advises clients on the valuation of patent portfolios. He has managed patent-related matters for some of the world’s most innovative companies including Google, Intel and Red Hat.
Beth Colosimo – Idea Lab Judge
Beth Colosimo serves as Executive Director of Business Development Resources & Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses.
At SLCC, I oversee various small business programs including the Business Resource Center, the Innovation Center (Incubator), the Conference Center, the Export Assistance office, the refugee leadership training program, as well as the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. I coordinate with state, county, city, and community partners to advance the training and education for entrepreneurs and small business owners throughout the Wasatch Front. As a former small business owner, I understand the challenges of owning and operating a small business and enjoy working with entrepreneurs at all stages of business development.
Tony Passey – Idea Lab Judge
Tony Passey is founder and CEO of Firetoss, a marketing and web development firm in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also an Assistant Professor, Lecturer in the Marketing Department of the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah.
Firetoss provides SEO, marketing and creative services to firms across the nation. Firetoss’ integrated approach to strategy, creative development and marketing execution provide a unique advantage over other agencies. Tony created a new digital marketing curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students that applies marketing strategy to project-based assignments. Students learn through a mixture of lectures and hands-on group work for local non-profits and small businesses.
Tony has engaged in various start-ups ranging from tech companies to retail to manufacturing, including the creation of an elite brand of energy efficient products, Thermaglass Windows, and the west coast’s first fully custom fiberglass door manufacturing company, SureFit Door Co. Tony Passey received a B.A. in Economics and an M.S. in Finance from the University of Utah. He has received several business awards including being named to the Utah v100, top CEOs in technology.
Wiliam Borghetti – Ideal Lab Judge
Wiliam Borghetti is the founder and CEO of APiO, Inc, which is building the world’s first objective rating system for invoices. APiO leverages Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Machine Learning (ML) to transform how capital is accessed by Small-to Medium-sized business (SMBs) and how cash is invested by institutional investors.
William is a co-founder and managing partner of Daffinity Technology Ventures (DTV), a UT-based “technology capitalist” that invests both capital and technology in early-stage companies. Prior to Title iO, William was the former CEO of Title iO, a DTV portfolio company that leverages Daffinity’s SecureSync technology for the title, escrow and mortgage lending marketplace. William previously served as CEO of Sendside, a secure communications and document delivery company and was the founder, president and chief technology officer of Campus Pipeline, Inc. (CP), a data integration company for the higher education marketplace. CP was acquired by Sungard Data Systems (now Ellucian).
William is currently an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with VentureCapital.Org the nation’s most successful non-profit venture accelerator and works closely with numerous startups helping with capitalization and business strategy. He is an active investor in, and advisor to, several local companies and is a member of WBI Angels. William has been recognized numerous times by Signal Peak Ventures for its Top 100 Entrepreneurs Award and is a recipient of the Utah Business – Top 40 under 40 Award which recognizes the top entrepreneurs in the state of Utah.
William and his wife, Michelle, reside in Holladay, UT with their two children and Axel, their large, intimidating, but well trained German Shepherd.
Brock Felt – Idea Lab Judge
Brock is a serial entrepreneur and has launched businesses in health, software, consulting services, data science, risk management, e-commerce, lead generation, product development, real estate, and online acquisition.
In 2005 Mr. Felt created a strategic partnership with Kevin Harrington from ABC’s hit show Shark Tank, and his company TVGoods, now AsSeenOnTv.com. Through this unique partnership they were able to launch brands and products with George Foreman, 50Cent, Vanilla Ice, Hulk Hogan, HSN.com, QVC.com, Target.com. He is a sought after founder, speaker, educator and keynote, and even spoke at the prestigious SANG (Speaker Author Networking Group) Event in Los Angeles.
Tricia Schumann – Idea Lab Mentor
Tricia Schumann has been engaged in the management and ownership of hyper-growth technology and marketing businesses over the past 30 years with an emphasis on healthcare in the past 10 years.
Ms. Schumann is the founder and Chief Executive Officer at BachHealth, the developers of PitchHealth™. PitchHealth™ is a marketplace of emerging and best practices healthcare solutions for employers and their benefit managers. She serves on for profit and non-profit boards including Med One Capital, Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, Junior Achievement, ARCS Foundation, Illuminate, American Marketing Association and The Right To Try Foundation. She is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and mentors early stage company healthcare and fintech entrepreneurs through accelerator/incubator programs.
Ms. Schumann was named one of the “30 Women to Watch” by Utah Business Magazine and was recognized as a finalist by the Woman Tech Council. Ms. Schumann is a graduate of Harvard Business School and has passions for golf, pilates/yoga, cycling and travel and most especially her three children.
Christopher & Andrew Pagels – Idea Lab Mentors
Business students turned bioengineers turned entrepreneurs, the Pagels Brothers have started, helped, raised money for, advised, and coached around 75 startup companies in the last 5 years.
They started Investable with the simple mission of aligning and connecting founders and funders, and work with companies to develop capital strategy that will enable them to build and grow durable, sustainable ventures.
Jane Ann Craig – Idea Lab Mentor
Jane Ann Craig is dedicated to helping entrepreneurs, executives and organizations in achieving their goals, dreams and visions. An investor and adviser for startups to multi-million-dollar companies, board member to profit and nonprofit organizations, inspirational and motivational speaker, Jane Ann is known for her expertise in the startup, growth and acquisition of multiple insurance, provider network, administrative and service related companies.
Founder and President/CEO of Total Dental Administrators, Inc., Total Dental Administrator Health Plan of Arizona and Dental Management Administrators, Jane Ann sold Total Dental Administrators, Inc. and its affiliates to Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina and Companion Life Insurance Company in 2011 and continued to serve in the capacity of President/CEO and Board member until stepping down in 2016 to launch Jane Ann Craig, International.
A graduate of the University of Irvine California and resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jane Ann has received numerous awards and held industry related positions in the community. She is a past President of the Utah Association of Health Underwriters, past Regional Vice President and National Ethics Chair for the National Association of Health Underwriters She serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Utah, Utah Business Insurance Company and has been featured as one of Utah’s Business 30 Women to Watch.
